Middle functioning senior citizens
and how to entertain them

Singers in a nursing home

Nursing homes

And other facilities often have residents who are not really capable of functioning on their own but quite rational and mobile.

You can entertain them as you would entertain a regular group their age. They usually are aware enough to recognize a condescending approach, so I suggest that you still try to focus on stimulating individuals and get the group active and interacting.

Old Time Sing-a-Longs

The music can range from the fun, and interactive good old time sing-a-longs to more upbeat complex material that they knew in their "courting years".

Music that cognoscente people remember best is the music from the years that they were first having romantic feelings until they married and just a bit beyond that.

Play songs from the earliest dating years and until a few years into early marriage.

Sit Down Dancing

Nursing home residentsAlthough they are more often in wheel chairs etc., you can get them to do what I call "Sit-Down-Dancing". The older residents can move their shoulders and arms while sitting and still get energized and circulate the blood.

While entertaining senior citizens with music, I like to add my very own "Smiles are contagious" game, where I encourage people to smile and then ask them if they feel happy.

The logic is that when you smile your brain is fooled into thinking that you are happier, and so then you are.
