I have been playing the ukulele since I was ten years old.
I began ukulele lessons in my hometown of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada (the land of hockey great Sidney Crosby).
As a young adult I joined the Halifax Adult Ukulele Ensemble, directed by J. Chalmers Doane and we toured throughout East Coast Canada and even welcomed visiting cruise ships to Halifax with our performances.
The group took two exciting trips to Hawaii, once in 1988 and the other in 1995. We performed at the University of Hawaii for a music conference, at the Kamehameha School, a school for children of Hawaiian descent, at the Aloha Tower (featured in the hit movie From Here To Eternity) and at shopping centres.
After our first trip to Hawaii a friend called that night to say that he had just seen me strumming my uke on the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw in New York. Our group had been featured there as it had been on Honolulu TV.
A lot of neat things have happened thanks to my ukulele.
I have a ukulele CD which is getting a lot of great feedback, most recently from two powerhouses: Sid Ganis, the president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences: “I love your album… listen to it all the time now” .
It was even written on a card with a golden Oscar- so cool! I also received a great review from the
Fretted Instrument Guild of America.
I have a lot of experience playing at seniors centres. I play music from the Roaring 20's up including Hawaiian.
